co+labo+J Jiyugaoka urban research pavilion final DAY 4 - 23 July 2013  

co+labo data collection, conducted in our +J urban research pavilion in Kuhonbutsugawa Street, Jiyugaoka was completed on Tuesday afternoon. The pavilion was dismantled just before a downpour. A very loud thunder was a proper background for the finale of a very successful exercise. 

Over the four days, co+labo team of research assistants and students have greeted a huge number of visitors and assisted them in providing the Mn'M project with invaluable data for further investigations.The project was successful due to a truly tremendous response by a number of to us known and unknown individuals and organisations, some of which appear at the snapshots +J pavilion on this blog. We were proud to see how our modest tent became a meeting hub, accepted as an organic part of an already mature urban culture of Kuhonbutsugawa promenade. 

Very soon, co+labo will start preparing the autumn data collection session.  We will use the experiences from the last four days to set up an even better +J pavilion in October

co+labo wholeheartedly thanks the residents and institutions of Jiyugaoka and all visitors of the +J pavilion who helped this research exercise become an urban event - and succeed.

co+labo team has started work on construction of Jiyugaoka urban research pavilion  

The work has started at the grounds of the local Shinto shrine on Saturday morning. The testing of the tent structure was conducted under the guidance of Mr Shimura, the representative of local community which generously supports this co+labo Mn'M project. The pavilion will be erected in Kouhobutsugawa Street and, in the period 20-23 July, serve as the centre for collection of data on urban quality of that area.

Mn’M in Tokyo - Jiyugaoka co+labo urban research pavilion  

in summer, autumn and winter of 2013, Kuhonbutsugawa Street in Jiyugaoka will be the site of investigations within the major research Mn’M project.  The work will be conducted in an urban research pavilion. The jury (Davisi Boontharm, Tetsuo Kondo, Ryoko Iwase, Sano Sano, Tamao Hashimoto, chaired by Darko Radovic) reviewed internal co+labo submissions  for  design of the summer pavilion, and awarded the first prize to co+labo undergraduate student Kira Horie. The pavilion will be erected on 19 July and the fieldwork conducted 20-23 July.

 Dérive: In Search of Urban Intensities of Tokyo

This volume of visual essays presents a selection of recordings from Tokyo fieldwork, and fragments of rich follow-up discussions at Keio University, which were conducted by the team of experts involved in an interdisciplinary urban and architectural research project Measuring the non-Measurable - Mn’M in November 2012.

Mn’M Project, which is central to IKI - International Keio Institute for Architecture and Urbanism, was conceived as an open stage for discussion of urban quality and the ways of addressing its complexity. The term “measurable” in the title of the project is meant to provoke. One of the key aims of Mn’M is to challenge the ruling, unsustainable schism between “measurable” and “non-measurable”, “textual” and “numerical” in the urban and to, possibly, address its totality, the Lefebvrian oeuvre. The primary focus of Mn’M is at two systems of urban phenomena which resist easy, if not any, quantification - culture and sustainability. That is where, by focusing at diverse urban densities and intensities, it seeks to advance theories of urban design and architecture.

Current investigations of urban densities tend to oversimplify the challenge, by missing to include the closely related (but not equivalent) themes of urban intensity and by neglecting environmental and cultural specificity. It is exactly there, within the themes of urban intensity and cultural specificity, that Mn’M seeks to advance theories of urban design and architecture.
Methodologically radical, Mn’M Tokyo fieldwork was inspired by Situationists practice of dérive. Experimental drifts through urban fabric of Tokyo focused at recognizing, identifying, engaging and variously capturing and sharing diverse spatial expressions of urban intensity and, thus, contributing to the much needed, different thinking about the phenomena which elude all efforts to be captured and quantified, while, at the same time, making critical contribution to the oeuvre, the quality of the urban.

23 April 2013 co+labo hosted a lecture by Ilze Paklone

Ilze (who is a PhD student at the University of Tokyo's Nishimura Lab) delivered a lecture Hybrid Visual Language 

the competition-winning bamboo pavilion, designed by co+labo student Saki Kozono, was built in Tokushima

as part of the Tokushima LED Art Festival, which will be open 20-29 April 2013
